LICENSE PLATE MYSTERY SOLVED

In last month’s issue I raised the question, “Who is the owner of the New York State license plate with the letters, ILUVPADL?” I noted that I had seen it entering the Long Island Expressway in Roslyn but was unable to get close enough to speak to the driver. What further confused me was that I thought that there was also a map of Shelter Island on the back of the car. I asked for help to locate the owner and thus be sure that by “PADL “ the owner was referring to the nickname of our sport of platform tennis.

Well, help I got, the very first day after publication and from who else but the wonderful person with the horns in his headgear, David Kjeldsen. Of course, it was easy for him because he probably saw the car and its plate many times. It belonged to Marina Ohlmuller, the wife of his former National Sales Manager at Viking Athletics, David Ohlmuller. The Ohlmuller’s, have moved to Chicago, and must have new registration plates now.

My deepest thanks to David for solving the mystery and to Marjorie Hodson, APTA Executive Director, for supplying the photo above of the plate. The photo was also used on the APTA web site where it was not identified.

In response to my request for other auto plates identifying the owner’s attraction to our sport, I received only one response. The first President of Region VII, Taylor Bowen, sent me a photo of his plate, which is displayed below. My thanks to him for his interest and congratulations on his election to head the newest APTA Region.

My site is still open for pictures of additional license plates. I hope that more of you will respond. And, by the way, save those plates, if you can. They might be a contribution to the platform tennis museum for a display sometime. Hey, the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum in Newport, Rhode Island has some displays that would seem equally nonsensical but fun to see.
