Miscellanous Topics

AD IN APTA protective eyewear program. Signs are important but the testimony as the result of experience and possible effects outlined in the article by Dr. Bernard H. Doft are even more critical. (By personal experience I can tell you that any loss of eyesight is a life-changing event.)

AD OUT Logo for the 2007 Nationals. It lacks proper identification of the sport. “Once upon a time”, (This is how most fairy tales begin), it was decreed that the symbol for the sport’s national Men’s and Women’s championships would be required to have the letters of the sanctioning body, the APTA, and its logo in it. The logo for 2007 gives the impression that it’s a foot race.

AD OUT Small representation of Region I on the APTA Board of Directors. From its inception in 1934 the APTA was lead by men and women from the New York metropolitan area. After all, the sport was born there. The current Board has no Director from New Jersey and a Director who is part time from Westchester.

AD OUT Number of National Championships conducted in Region I. In spite of its lack of representation on the APTA Board of Directors, six of the eight National Championship tournaments are in Region I. Other areas need to come forward to conduct these tournaments to give a regional balance to the season.

AD INTaking platform tennis to college. It was done before, many years ago, but it is certainly worth a second effort. A tip of the cap to the Wilton, Connecticut group in their launch of the College Platform Team Challenge on November 23!
