VIKING JUNIOR TOUR
A REAL WINNER

By Charles E. Vasoll

The subject of Junior platform tennis came up at the dinner table last night. It was just my wife and myself with no grandchildren playing the sport or any other player to follow. My wife did know that the Viking Long Island tournament was to be played on the weekend because, as LIPTA Treasurer, I was corralling entries. She asked how it was going and I told her that we had 33 teams signed up and anticipated a few more. She said “Viking really did a great job for the Juniors”. I agreed and it suddenly hit me. Yes, the Viking Junior Tour really was special!

Before David Kjeldsen put his name and firm behind it, the Juniors had only the National Championship to test their skills and enjoy the camaraderie of the sport. Maybe they played a little at their home club but the tour really opened the door to the game for most of them.

If you have children or grandchildren that have not learned about platform tennis, I urge you to make an effort to introduce them to the game. They may not be enthusiastic about the sport right now, but some time, in years to come, those few days on the court will be fondly remembered. Then when the opportunity to participate comes again, they will be ready.
