MY SERVE
AD IN (+) DEUCE (=) AD OUT (-)

AD OUT“Retirement” of four APTA Directors. Once again I rail against the concept of “term limits” which force able and interested Directors to leave the Board. The membership should not be forced to lose the leadership of strong Directors like Taylor Bowen, Bob Callaway, Tim McAvoy and Martin Sturgess.

AD INSeveral instructional articles in Platform Tennis Vol. 8 Issue 4. Thanks to Gerri Viant, Patty Hogan, Eric Moran and Mike Carrico for their contributions to members knowledge about how to improve their play.

AD OUTPresentation of Directors for election to the Board. There is no information about the background of the proposed candidates, what area the represent or what their assignment on the Board they will fill. And, if you don’t vote, your absent ballot is voted for them.

DEUCELogo for the Mixed Nationals Championship in Chicago. They got it partially right with a portion of the APTA logo included. However it is missing the letters “APTA” and words, “American Platform Tennis Association”. How would anyone know the sport it represents?

AD OUTLack of tiebreaker knowledge in Men’s 60+ National Championship final. Four experienced players forgot the APTA format for a tiebreaker. Tournament Co-Chairman Bob Brown had to jump in from being a spectator to correct the order of serve. In the second tiebreaker in the final, they got it right.

DEUCESingles game for Platform Tennis backed by the APTA. There appears to be a renewal of interest in having tournaments in a singles format. An “Eastern States Singles Championship” has been scheduled for April 7 at the Greenwich Country Club. Details are on-line at paddlepro.com. It may attract some new players to the sport (ones who cannot work with a partner) but its different rules (two serves, no-ad scoring) may bring an unwanted conflict with rules for doubles.
