MY SERVE
AD IN (+) DEUCE (=) AD OUT (-)

AD INThe first article by Ann Sheedy as Executive Director. It was a real pleasure to read our new ED’s background and experiences in tournament play. I could relate to it and I suspect many other members could as well.

AD OUTThe report of the score in the Women’s Chicago Charities final. It would seem that the cover story of Platform Tennis Magazine would report the score of the match consistently. The Women’s final at the Chicago Charities was shown as 7-5, 6-2 in the pink draw sheet but 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 in the article about the match. What was the score?*

AD OUTPage numbering in the magazine. It was brought to my attention by a much more alert reader then myself that the page numbering in the APTA Member Publication is unique in the industry. In all other magazines Page 1 is the right hand page after the inside cover not page 3 as in PTM where page 1 is the cover and page 2 is the inside cover.

DEUCECenterfold with “The Official Rules of Platform Tennis”. On the positive side, it was an excellent idea to have the rules in print so that they could be used as a reference when a question arises. The fact that they are on the web site is appropriate but inconvenient during play. The negatives are that the print is so small that it is difficult to read and recent changes are not shown in bold type.

AD OUTThe “by-line” omission from “APTA Hall of Fame” article. Robert A. Brown, Chairman of the Hall of Fame Committee, worked overtime to get this information about the inductees into the magazine and should have been credited with its submission.

AD INThe instructional video by Peter Berka on the APTA “beta site”. It is rare for me to applaud something on the APTA web site but this piece earned “putting my hands together” as they say in show business.

AD OUTAPTA TOURNAMENTS – December – January. Nothing is new here. Every issue of the magazine lists events that have already been played or are too late to enter by the time the magazine is delivered. Volume 9 Issue 2 should have January-February in the calendar so when the magazine is in the member’s mailbox in the first week of December, there is still time to use the information.

* Note: Since posting this page, I received an e-mail from Annica Cooper advising me that the correct score in the final was 7-5, 6-2 as stated on the pink draw sheet page of Platform Tennis Magazine. The score reported in the Magazine’s article about the match was the score for the semi-final, not the final.
