The Glass Half Full I had the honor and privilege of attending the APTA Hall of Fame induction of Winnie Hatch and Sharon Hummers earlier this month as part of the Women’s 40’s / 60’s National Championships at the Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, New Jersey. Following the ceremony I took a gander at the draw for the women’s 40’s tournament. To be frank, I did a double take. The top seeds were the same as those I regularly see in “open” women’s tournaments. In fact, at first glance the whole draw looked as if it could be a regular “open” tournament. Okay, I admit, I had to gingerly ask some of the entrants whether they were truly eligible to play, but all assured me, some quite sadly, that they were. Those cynics in the game today who always view the glass as half empty might say, the women’s platform game today isn’t strong because, let me be delicate here, the older players still dominate the game and there are no younger women stepping up to control the gold. On the other hand, those who view the glass as half full, celebrate the fact that there is still an athletic endeavor where you can compete in open competition, be over 40, and still be the best in the world. Hey, who wants to be 14 years old, 68 pounds, jumping on a pommel horse, winning a gold medal, knowing you’ll never get any better in your sport? Give me platform any day. what do you think? let me know! info@platformtennisnews.com |
